Everyday Faith in Public Life

In Israel, religion is part of everyday life – visible, audible, and tangible.
Orthodox Jews on the bus or in the bakery, Christian processions through the Old City, Muslim calls to prayer throughout the day.
Here, faith is not just personal. It shapes public space, daily rhythms – and often, conflict.

In many Western societies, religion has largely disappeared from the public sphere – made invisible, often noticed only when it becomes controversial.
In the U.S. though, religion remains highly present – but mostly within defined communities, separated by geography or denomination.

Israel offers a striking contrast: different religious worlds live in close proximity.
This creates moments of connection – and friction – that raise deep questions about the place of faith and its expressions in our own societies:

How does lived faith shape everyday life? Where does religion build bridges – and where does it divide? And what might we learn from Israel’s religious diversity and its tensions for our own social realities?

Just one example - your ideas count!

What would be the format of a typical seminar?

Our programs typically run for 7–8 days (6–7 nights).

A single location – for example, Jerusalem – serves as a home base for encounters across Israel and the Palestinian territories.

This structure allows space for depth, reflection, and honest conversations – while also offering a steady place of rest: a retreat for grounding, orientation, and renewal along the way.

Who could you meet?

  • Rossing Center, Jerusalem: Insights into interreligious education – with Jewish, Christian, and Muslim voices.

  • Neighborhood visits in Beit Jala, East Jerusalem, and Bnei Brak: How does lived religion shape everyday life in Christian, Muslim, and ultra-Orthodox Jewish communities?

  • Ahmadiyya community, Haifa: A Muslim minority’s message of peace – and its commitment to interfaith dialogue in a secular environment.

  • Interfaith prayer for peace: A shared experience of spirituality and reconciliation beyond confessional boundaries.

  • African Hebrew Israelites, Dimona: Conversation about religious identity, community life, diet, and the struggle for recognition in Israel

  • Evening reflection: What happens to my own understanding of faith when religion is visible, public – and no longer private?

Why is this relevant to us?

How does lived faith shape everyday life? Where does religion build bridges – and where does it divide? And what might we learn from Israel’s religious diversity and its tensions for our own social realities?
